Use this calculator to determine if any of your Social Security or RRB benefits are taxable. We calculate both your current year taxable benefit and the taxable amount under lump sum election method.

Definitions
- Filing Status
- Choose the filing status for your return, the options include: "Married Filing Jointly", "Married Filing Separately and not living apart" or "Any other filing status". Any other filing status includes all of the following: Single, Head of Household, Qualifying Widower, Married Filing Separately (living apart full year)
- Current Tax Year
- The tax year to calculate the total Social Security and RRB benefit that is taxable income.
- Total Social Security and RRB benefits received
- Total Social Security and RRB benefits received for the current tax year.
- Adjusted gross income w/o SSA and RRB benefits
- Adjusted gross income without the Social Security and RRB benefits for the current tax year.
- Exempt Income
- All tax exempt income for the current tax year from the following sources (as found on Line 4 of Worksheet 1):
- Tax exempt interest and dividends
- Excluded Qualified U.S. Savings Bond Interest (Form 8815)
- Excluded foreign earned income or housing (Form 2555/2555-EZ)
- Certain income of bona fide residents of American Samoa (Form 4563) and Puerto Rico
- Excluded employer-provided adoption benefits (Form 8839)
- Student loan interest deducted
- Tuition & related expenses deduction (after 12/31/01)
- Domestic production activities deduction (after 12/31/04)

- Earlier Tax Year
- The tax year that you are using to calculate your lump sum payment election.
- Total amount of SSA and RRB received for earlier tax year plus lump sum payment received after earlier tax year
- This is line 1 of Worksheet 2. Total amount of Social Security and RRB benefit received for earlier tax year plus any lump sum payment received after earlier tax year.
- Adjusted gross income reported on the return for earlier tax year
- This is line 3 of Worksheet 2. The adjusted gross income reported on the ealier tax year's return.
- Exempt Income
- All tax exempt income for the earlier tax year from the following sources (as found on Line 4 of Worksheet 2):
- Tax exempt interest and dividends
- Excluded Qualified U.S. Savings Bond Interest (Form 8815)
- Excluded foreign earned income or housing (Form 2555/2555-EZ)

- This is line 6 of Worksheet 2. Taxable SSA/RRB benefits previously reported on the return for earlier tax year.
- Taxable benefits reported on return for earlier tax year or as refigured due to a previous lump sum payment for earlier tax year
- This is line 19 of Worksheet 2. Taxable benefits reported on return for earlier tax year or as refigured due to a previous lump sum payment for earlier tax year
- Total amount of all SSA-1099 and RRB-1099 for current tax year minus lump sum payment for prior years
- This is line 1 of Worksheet 4. Total amount of all SSA-1099 and RRB-1099 for current tax year minus lump sum payment for prior years.
- Total of the amounts from line 20 of Worksheet 2 for all earlier years for which the lump sum payment was received.
- This is line 17 or Worksheet 4. Total of the amounts from line 20 of Worksheet 2 for all earlier years for which the lump sum payment was received. Do not include the amount calculated on Worksheet 2 of this calculator. It will be automatically included in the total.
